NORTH West Counties Second Division champions Bacup Borough started their First Division quest and soon found out mistakes will prove costly at this level.
Borough went behind after a defensive mix-up led to a corner and Danny Greystone scored from a looping shot.
A second followed when Telfer gave away a free kick, the ball struck the Borough post and Carlos Meakin followed up to score.
But Bacup showed much improved form in the second half and David Grey pulled a goal back on 48 minutes.
The home side were reduced to 10 men midway through the second half and Bacup capitalised on their advantage as Stuart Telfer laid the ball off for Nicky Taylor to equalise. Abbey Hey's frustration got the better of them and they were reduced to nine men after Lee Anderson was head-butted.
Karl Stanley scored a 30-yard stunner and Taylor grabbed his second to complete the win.
