THE trophy cupboard at Holy Souls RC primary school in Wilworth Crescent, Pleckgate, Blackburn, is crammed to the brim for the first time in years.

Pupils from every year are thriving on and off the field under the direction of head teacher Christine Davis, who has been in the post for three years.

Herself an avid football fan, she told reporter Clare Cook more about the role of sport in schools and challenges facing the education sector for the coming year.

SO what sporting successes has the school had this season?

We are really impressed with everything that has been going on. The mixed tag rugby team represented Blackburn with Darwen at the Lancashire Youth Games in Lancaster and won. The Year 5 won the St Mary's College paper hockey tournament which was great fun. I never realised rolled up newspaper could make such a convincing bat. And the boys football team won the small schools league.

And what are these successes down to?

The school has excelled. We have been part of the Sports England primary links with Our Lady and St John high school.

What have been the main challenges for you this year?

The budget has been very difficult to deal with. We have found ourselves in a stand still situation. I was hoping to move forward but I have just about managed to make the books balance.

So what are you most proud of in school?

One of the best things here is the welcoming spirit in the school between teachers and parents. There are eight teachers as well as myself and 185 pupils but our numbers are growing. Being involved with the church helps focus the children and keep the motto alive. We try and make children understand they need to love one another, respect each other and show forethought towards each other.

And away from school?

I am a season ticket holder for Bolton Wanderers where I live. It is difficult when there are so many Blackburn Rovers fans but there is just no competition!!

But if I am not watching football I would be eager to read and I am keen to get my hands on a copy of JK Rowling's new book. The children have been under strict instructions not to reveal a word!
