REGARDING your Comment (LET, August 9) concerning Hyndburn Council imposing £50 fines for litter bugs, dog owners who do not clean up after their pets and untidy householders.
Burnley Council issues fixed penalty notices of £50 to those caught dropping litter and to those who fail to remove dog fouling.
Such notices have been issued throughout the borough since October 2002. Last year, 95 such notices were issued.
There are a number of officers within the council who are trained to issue such notices and these include cleansing officers, park rangers and community wardens. In addition the local police community support officers have also been trained.
The fine of £50 cannot be retained by Burnley Council but is sent to central government.
ANDREA LENSKY, Acting Environmental Health and Cleansing Manager, Burnley Council.
