A MAN has been charged with the attempted murder of his daughter after driving her away from the house where she lived with foster carers.

The 14-year-old girl, from Darwen, has been on a life support machine at Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, after the car they were in crashed on the M6 motorway last Thursday.

The 35-year-old man, also from Darwen, was expected to appear before Blackburn magistrates today.

After the crash he was also taken to hospital with minor injuries. He was charged by detectives in Blackburn last night.

Blackburn with Darwen Council social services has launched an investigation into the events which led to the 14-year-old leaving her foster carers' home in Blackburn before the incident.

The family of the girl, who can not be identified for legal reasons, was today described by her family as a lovely girl who would do anything to help anyone.

Her grandmother also from Darwen, said: "A lot of people don't know what has happened but we have had a lot of people here supporting us.

"She is a very pleasant girl, she always smiles a lot and has a good sense of humour.

"Her mother had a big accident a few years ago and she helped her a lot by taking her pictures and talking to her, she kept her spirits up.

"She is really a lovely girl and will help anybody if they ask her to do something.

"She thinks of other people and is very kind hearted."

The teenager's mother said: "When I had my accident a few years ago, my daughter pulled me out of it and I really wanted to help her out of this."

The crash happened on the southbound carriageway of the M6 between junctions 41 and 42.

The pair were taken to hospital where the girl is being treated for 'life threatening injuries'.

Her father suffered an arm injury as he collided with another vehicle.

Both carriageways of the motorway were closed for some time.

Detective Inspector Neil Hunter said: "It is a tragic incident that has had an effect on everyone that has worked on the inquiry.

"Our thoughts go out to the family, particularly her mother, grandparents and brothers."

Stephen Sloss, director of social services, Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, said: "Our first thoughts are with the family at this difficult time.

"It has been a sad and traumatic weekend for them.

"Social Services and hospital staff have been supporting the family.

"We are also assisting the police with their continuing inquiries.

"In circumstances such as these it is proper that a full investigation takes place, under the leadership of the Area Child Protection Committee.

"This will seek to determine how the agencies have planned and worked together for this child."
