BLACKPOOL put Saturday's thrashing at QPR behind them with an impressive Carling Cup victory at Barnsley.

The Seasiders took less than five minutes to grab a lead. Mike Sheron, making only his second appearance for the Seasiders after leaving Oakwell, broke clear down the left after a well-judged Kirk Hilton pass.

He beat Peter Handyside before squaring for Scott Taylor to score off the crossbar for his and Blackpool's first competitive goal of the new campaign.

A physical Barnsley side, helped by some generous refereeing decisions, tested new Seasiders keeper, Lee Jones, on several occasions, but it was Blackpool who doubled their lead when Neil Danns and Richie Wellens combined to play in Taylor who coolly slotted the ball past Sasa Illic.

The Seasiders remained on top after the break, helped by Wellens at his classy best. The midfielder, who suffered a public dressing down after a stupid sending off on Saturday, dominated the midfield alongside Blackburn loan-man Danns.

When Wellens had to leave the field through injury, boss Steve McMahon was forced into a reshuffle. Captain Simon grayson, who has had a difficult start to the season, came on at right-back with Leam Richardson pushed into midfield.

That gave Barnsley momentum and, moments later, the tricky Dean Gorre went down under a Kirk Hilton challenge and referee, Mr Joslin, gave a harsh-looking spot kick.

Gorre stepped up to send ones the wrong way and give the home side, still in administration and with their future clouded in uncertainty, some hope of a lucrative second round tie.

However, Blackpool and, in particular, the impressive Jones, stood up well, tipping an Anthony Kay drive around the post.

The Seasiders now head for their first Bloomfield Road game of the campaign, against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.
