DAY 1. Ey-up! -- the traffic lights have been switched off. Better slow down here. Is there anything coming? Look left; look right. Proceed slowly through the junction. "After you sir, -- no problem." There probably wasn't even a traffic queue on your approach to the junction.

Day 2. The traffic lights have been switched on again. It's a green light for me -- I'm going! No regard for any other vehicle (especially a pedal cyclist) who may have jumped the lights on the opposing junction. "I have right of way so if I hit you or you hit me it will be your fault!" Lesson: If you don't require drivers to think they won't (and don't) think!

Conclusion: For all you people out there who may support the Lancashire County Council spending £514,000 of your money (LET, July 30) on traffic calming (humps and bumps etc) and speed cameras, then be careful please that you don't fall into the category of the 'non-thinker.'

There is only one answer towards improving road safety and that's by way of driver education. This can then be followed by a firm law and enforcement policy as drivers will then be driving out of knowledge instead of ignorance.

To place hazards in front of drivers who are already hitting thousands of hazards is just an unintellectual knee jerk reaction towards trying to solve a very serious problem.

You certainly won't get little snippets of information like this on either a speed awareness course or from a so-called expert employed by that political quango, the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety.
