MOVES are steaming ahead to bring a railway station back to Golborne.

Leigh and Makerfield MPs Andy Burnham and Ian McCartney are keeping up the pressure on politicians and operators following a successful petition.

Thousands of residents signed the MPs' appeal for a new station which was presented to Parliament recently.

The two MPs have now met train operators to discuss possible services to and from a new station.

and have been in negotiations with the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive to express local demand.

Train companies are at present bidding for franchises on local rail networks and the MPs are meeting as many as possible so that they understand issues related to a new station.

In a joint statement the MPs said: "It is important that we keep up the pressure on all concerned to get our station. We want everyone involved to understand that a new station will be well used by residents and others from surrounding areas.

"An investment in Golborne's rail system would bring much needed regeneration, potential for more jobs, a better environment and better transport to the town and as our petition shows the people of Golborne want it. That is why we are continuing the campaign."
