FOUR men trashed a Darwen off-licence after drinking heavily on a head-wetting celebration.

Magistrates sitting in Blackburn watched a video that showed shopkeeper Ashraq Shigri being punched in the face when he went to remonstrate with the men.

The "video nasty" showed the men knocking over displays and shelving units after walking into Hindle Wines, in Hindle Street.

Prosecutor Neil White said the incident appeared to be without "provocation, rhyme or reason."

Paul Mills, 22, of Chapter Road, Darwen; Peter Andrew Brindle, 22, of Hodgson Street, Darwen; Jason Lee Otley, 29, of Maria Street, Darwen, and Scott Anthony Woodcock, 33, of Earls Drive, Hoddlesden, all pleaded guilty to criminal damage and were fined £200 with £75 compensation and £15 costs.

Mills also pleaded guilty to assaulting Mr Shigri causing him actual bodily harm and was ordered to pay him £300 compensation and a further fine of £200.

Sian Hall, defending all four, said drink had played a major part.

All three had watched the video at the police station and had been appalled by their behaviour.

She said Mills had also been drinking heavily as the four celebrated the birth of his first child. He claimed he had previously been involved in a road rage incident with Mr Shigri and had still been angry and annoyed when he went into the shop.
