PLANS to build a new health centre in Nelson have been backed by Pendle Council.
The proposals to convert an existing canal-side warehouse, in Carr Road, which has been disused for almost 20 years, and build a new four storey building were supported by the Nelson Committee.
A report to members stated that the existing health centre, in Leeds Road, is unable to provide the level of service required by the NHS. It has also led to problems with recruiting GPs to work there. It was felt the warehouse's position alongside the town's main supermarket would not only mean the rescue of a semi-derelict listed building, but also bring health services in the town up to the necessary standards.
Under the conditions of the planning permission no development will take place until adequate parking measures, dropping off and turning facilities, public transport provision, pedestrian access and traffic calming measures have been agreed.
