CHAMPIONS of the disabled shopper, Shopmobility, needs partners to help extend the service to Atherton.

Businesses, councillors and residents have backed the charity's plan, but extra support is needed from traders and individuals to secure a lottery grant.

To start the ball rolling the charity is organising an awareness day in the town centre on September 19 at which Friends in fancy dress will start a collection for the fund.

Shopmobility manager David Eccles said: "We have the support of all the local councillors and business people.

"Wigan Council is trying to improve Atherton by introducing pedestrianisation of the main street. This benefits most people but it does mean access is restricted so people need to park and walk to the shops."

"Those who experience any form of limited mobility will have more difficulty shopping in Atherton and our charity's aim is to help these people.

"We believe the best potential site for our new office is on a section of the former market area in St John Street.

"We would like to explore the idea of developing a lottery bid around constructing a purpose built building on part of the area.

"We have had meetings with the market manager and Cllr Susan Loudon, who agreed setting up a Shopmobility scheme would be good for the town.

"The new scheme could only be achieved if we are able to secure a Lottery grant. To make the bid successful we will need partners adding their names offering support in funds or in kind.

"We are starting from scratch but we are getting a good response in our study."

Anyone willing to help can fill in the leaflet that will be available on the day, or ring David on 01942 777985.
