HISTORICAL Society members are mourning the death of their chairman Stan Smith -- who has died at the age of 68.

Mr Smith, who was chairman and treasurer of Tyldesley and District Historical Society, had written several books and published a study on the Halls of Tyldesley.

The former Leigh Grammar School pupil was working on the history of coal mining in Tyldesley. He had a great love and knowledge of railways and during retirement he dedicated his time to local history research.

He leaves a wife, Eileen, sons Colin and Graham and two grandchildren.
