Leigh 1st XV 7 Bowdon 15

Upset for Leigh

AFTER a convincing start to the season last week, Leigh RU came down to earth with a bump, beaten 15-7 by newly promoted Bowdon.

Leigh started well with an early try and conversion by Wilcock, but then became guilty of squandering early chances with a scrappy performance. Bowdon went close to scoring but Leigh hung on to a half time lead of 7-0.

Bowdon scored an unconverted try in the corner immediately from the restart, and took the lead shortly afterwards with a penalty goal.

A late catch and drive from a close-in line-out saw Bowdon score again and clinch the game with a touchline conversion.

David Penn was adjudged the Leigh Man of the Match for a tireless work-rate.

Leigh Tofts began the new season in style with a thumping 29-0 victory over Lordswood. Despite a seven hour motorway journey, the Tofts took to the field in determined mood and matched the home side for pace and commitment.

Captain Yates and his men held the Kent side at bay in the opening quarter with resolute defence before taking the lead with an excellent passing move through all the backs. Debut winger Mike Timberlake raced over in the corner.

Next on the score-sheet was back row Lawrinson who seized on a quickly taken tap penalty to burst through.

After the interval there was more last ditch defence for Leigh as they drove the home side back not once but twice when they had crossed the Tofts try-line. Then, as the heat and hard pitch began to drain the players energy, the Tofts moved up a gear.

Tries from Fallon and Leake put the match beyond doubt and Yates added his name to the score-sheet with a solo kick and chase. Porteous tagged on two conversions but the highlight was keeping a clean sheet.
