PACE, flair, commitment and discipline were the main ingredients of Hoppers' fine start to the season with a six try demolition of Longton who were denied a single point in reply.

Hoppers led 15-0 at half time through two tries by Oliver Viney and a conversion and a penalty from Paul Bailey.

Continuing the pressure Viney completed his hat-trick with Bailey converting and then scoring the next try from an interception inside his own 22. Russell Flynn converted this one.

The introduction of a number of replacements failed to disturb Hoppers' momentum and further tries came from Darren Clark and John Young to complete a satisfying afternoon.

Hoppers now visit Maccesfield in the second round and the winners of that tie will entertain Waterloo or Moseley in the third round.

On Saturday Hoppers open their league programme with a visit to New Brighton.
