A PILOT project to get youngsters from disadvantaged communities into work was today showing off its achievements.

The Young Volunteer Challenge was showcasing the work of youngsters aged 18 and 19 who have been involved in local charities and government agencies.

The initiative, backed by the Department of Education and Skills, is being piloted in Lancashire by the University of Central Lancashire and is one of nine taking place nationwide. It is aimed at getting people to volunteer with a view of developing skills for further learning and employment.

The scheme, launched last year to support those who are short of money but want to participate in volunteering, pays the teenagers £45 per week with a one-off £750 cash incentive on completion.

The showcase event, designed to boost publicity for the volunteer scheme, was taking place at Eanam Wharf, Blackburn.
