MEMBERS of Great Harwood Community Action Group and the Prospects environmental panel held a spring clean throughout the town.

Hyndburn Mayor Coun Win Frankland and Rotary club member Mark Exton (right), as well as Hyndburn parks staff including Gordon Mason, were among the team which cleared shrubs and trees around the 100-year-old Mercer Memorial Clock at Town Gate.

Prospects spokeswoman Brenda Vickery said: "The garden was so overgrown that the clock was no longer properly lit by the existing lighting. Removal of the trees and shrubs means it will be much better lit at night and at Christmas."

Volunteers also cleaned up litter and spruced-up streets, parks and other open spaces in the town.

Gloves, litter pickers and bags were provided and residents, businesses, shops, pubs and restaurants were urged to do their bit. The town's Civic Society and Business Forum also helped.
