VIOLINIST Nicholas Chen has another string to his bow after hitting a top note with judges.

The 14-year-old Bury CE High pupil was first prize winner at Bury's Young Musician of the Year contest for 2004.

Talented pupils from Woodhey, St Gabriel's and Bury Grammar also took part in the contest, organised by the Rotary Club of Bury and Tottington.

Violinist Nicholas played Hungarian Dance by Nolek and Albinoni's Grave Adagio and Allegro in the competition, held in the boys' hall at Bury Grammar.

His prize included rehearsals with the Halle Orchestra, concert tickets, a CD voucher and trophy.

Head of music Stuart Battye said: "Nicholas represented the school very well and we are very proud of him.

"He is a very good musician and has always shown a lot of promise."
