FINAL plans for a multi-million pound superstore in Rossendale have been given the green light.

Asda's application for a split-level supermarket off St Mary's Way, Rawtenstall, was given the thumbs up by Rossendale borough councillors at last night's development control meeting.

The development, which will be completed in February next year and secures the futures of 350 workers while creating 150 new jobs, has been backed by Rossendale Chamber of Commerce, although concerns have been raised by the Valley's Civic Trust.

Lancashire County Highways has backed the plans, which include 576 car parking spaces, as acceptable. But Rossendale Civic Trust has submitted concerns over the design of the building, including the amount of glass walling.

The group would prefer the use of existing on-site natural stone and also feel there is confusion about pedestrian access, concern about service and delivery access and the siting of a lay-by on St Mary's Way which has been refused permission in the past.

Clive Balchin, of Rossendale Chamber of Commerce said: "The chamber is broadly in favour of this development. We do not agree with the proposal for three-hour parking with a £5 purchase being necessary, though. Pedestrian routes for shoppers from Asda to Bank Street is a priority too."

The chamber would also like to see CCTV at the new store

The store's opening date was to be in November this year, but the development hit stumbling blocks due to planning complications.

The old site in Bury Road, Rawtenstall, is to close with the new modern site, almost double the size of the old store, opening at the Lower Mills site off St Mary's Way.

The 25-year-old store in Bocholt Way will stay open until the new building is complete and ready for opening.
