A TOWN centre drinking ban is set to be introduced in Colne after police backed council proposals.

The booze-free zone, aimed at tackling drunken behaviour, would cover an area 50 metres either side of Albert Road/Keighley Road from Linden Road to Carry Lane. Drinkers who defy the ban could be fined £500.

Councillors on the Colne Committee approved the ban in principle at a meeting in May, but needed to consult with police, licensees and landowners before putting it into force.

Police would have the power to arrest anyone who drinks in the streets or fails to surrender any alcohol when told to.

Similar bans already exist in Burnley, Padiham, Rossendale and Clitheroe.

A report from Colne and West Craven Inspector Martin Holleran, to be considered by councillors next week states that so far this year there had been 42 reported incidents of drunkenness in the proposed area, 34 assaults and 25 reports of criminal damage.

It continues: "A designated area in Colne will provide the police with the power to target individuals and groups that have the potential to commit crime or behave in an anti-social manner as a result of consuming alcohol.

"It will also provide a much more welcoming environment for shoppers and visitors to the area.

"I see the use of these powers as a move to ensure that people will be able to enjoy the town centre of Colne at any time of day or night. People should not have to avoid the area for fear of being a victim of crime or get caught up in anti-social behaviour.

"I fully support the council in proposing and implementing the designated area."

The council has also sent letters to 70 licensed premises and 261 private addresses in the proposed area and received 21 responses. The plan may be agreed next Wednesday.
