LEIGH lecturer Julie McKiernan can take a bow after winning the Wigan Pier Theatre Company's writing competition.

A member of staff of the performing arts department at Wigan and Leigh College, Julie's passion for local history and drama helped her to glory.

Her piece "A Terrible Affray" tells the story of two detectives who drop on thieves at the London and North Western Goods Station in Wigan in 1895.

The work also involves a trial scene and touches on the harsh realities of life in working class Wigan.

Julie said: 'I have discovered a real passion for writing about local history through drama and I am looking forward to finishing this piece and seeing it performed by the Wigan Pier Theatre Company later this year."

She will become involved with the community drama group which is free for residents who are keen to learn more about the theatre regardless of previous experience.

The company ran the competition in April to discover new writing talent in the north west in a bid to create a new theatre piece for the museums at the Pier.
