DAVID May has conceded his Burnley career is finally over.

The defender was one of four players released at the end of last season by former Clarets boss Stan Ternent.

May, 33, who spent almost a year at Turf Moor, has since received offers from several other clubs as he mulls over his next move.

But the former Manchester United defender revealed that retirement has also entered his thoughts this summer.

May said: "I will not be going back to Burnley. I've spoken to the new manager, Steve Cotterill, and I wish him and the club all the very best in the future.

"I thoroughly enjoyed the season I had at Turf Moor and the fans were different class.

"But now the time has come to think ahead. I've had a few offers that I'm thinking about, but I haven't ruled out retirement yet either.

"I'll take my time, enjoy the summer and see what develops from there."

May made 39 appearances for Burnley after arriving from Old Trafford on a free transfer two games into last season.

The hugely experienced centre back scored four goals during an eventful campaign, including back-to-back strikes in February's 4-2 victory over Ipswich and the 2-2 draw at Reading.

Burnley have confirmed another pre-season friendly. The Clarets will face Accrington Stanley in their now traditional curtain-raiser at the Interlink Express Stadium on Saturday, July 10 (3pm KO).

A Turf Moor clash with Everton has already been organised for Thursday, July 22, while no date has yet been finalised for the Stan Ternent testimonial game against Manchester United.
