THE main road through Darwen was closed to traffic for around an hour and a half yesterday afternoon after a cement mixer lorry overturned near to Darwen Vale High School.

It is thought the vehicle, which was carrying a full load of cement, had been travelling towards Blackburn from the M65 and overturned as it negotiated a bend at the junction of the A666, Blackburn Road, at around 2.20pm.

Duty Inspector Steve Haworth said: "The driver was a bit shaken and has a cut to his hand but is not seriously injured.

"The cement mixer overturned onto the pavement, but luckily there was no one walking nearby at the time.

"It could have been quite dangerous if it had been an hour or two later when there were school children around.

"It was leaking oil quite heavily onto the pavement too, so the fire brigade was called and the recovery people were contacted to lift it back up upright."
