UNSWORTH councillor Sam Cohen has been appointed to represent Bury on the Greater Manchester Police Authority.

The retired company director previously served on the authority in 1995, at the end of a 12-year spell as a local Conservative councillor. He was re-elected for the Tories in June.

He said: "I am hopeful that I can achieve for the borough the best possible policing service that will enable people to feel safe and secure in their homes and on the streets.

"It is important that the Police Authority and Greater Manchester Police work closely together as both organisations are committed to reducing crime and tackling anti-social behaviour."

The authority is responsible for ensuring that GMP's annual budget of more than £500 million is used to deliver the most effective police service possible.
