A REMARKABLE dog from Poulton is set to be honoured at a national dog show next week.

Bracken the border collie has helped save the lives of walkers missing on Pendle Hill and joined the search for missing cocklers in Morecambe Bay earlier this year.

As a puppy, Bracken had been a victim of cruelty and found herself at a border collie rescue centre on Anglesey.

At the age of just eight weeks, Bracken was adopted by Peter and Irene Shaw. Peter, a member of the Bowland Penine Mountain Rescue team, had been keen for some time to train up a rescue dog.

Just two weeks after completing her initial training came Bracken's first 'find'. She saved a father and his three young children who were stuck up Pendle Hill.

She has made a total of three 'finds' on different search and rescue missions and, most recently, was involved in rescue attempts during the Morecambe Bay cockling tragedy. Bracken is due to receive her award at the Wag and Bone Show at Windsor Racecourse.

"My wife heard they were looking for dogs that had made good and sent off a letter explaining what Bracken had done and achieved," explained Peter: "We got a call out of the blue telling us that she had won. They won't tell us what the award is but we are looking forward to going to the show."

The Wag and Bone Show is organised by the Kennel Club and celebrates the role of dogs in society while also raising money for seven animal charities.
