THE disappointing news of the refusal of the government to finance the tramways comes as no surprise.

Nothings lasts for ever and if they had been run on a more secure footing the present situation would not have arisen.

Over a long period the council seemed fit to subsidise the various companies that took over the old Tower Company.

These monies were quite substantial and if invested would have amassed a fair proportion of the money required for the trams. Alas, it's short-sighted and, as usual, has left them, the council in its present situation.
