Bury 0 Scunthorpe 1: A POOR refereeing decision and a lack of concentration proved costly for a Shakers side who deserved at least a point from this game.

This tale of woe is becoming a familiar story following the 1-0 home defeat to Lincoln two weeks ago.

It was an 89th-minute goal from teenage debutant Michael Rankine that earned Scunthorpe a victory that fired them to the top of Coca Cola League Two.

Forgetting the fact that the free-kick decision that led to the goal was wrongly called -- Brian Barry-Murphy did not foul wily old campaigner Peter Beagrie -- it was rank bad defending that allowed Scunthorpe skipper Andy Crosby to head Beagrie's measured cross into the box where substitute Rankine had the easiest of chances.

Frustratingly, it was the only opening the visitors carved out throughout the whole of the second half.

While 19-year-old Rankine was celebrating his contribution to the game, it was a different story for another teenager, Bury's Dave Nugent.

The Shakers' leading goalscorer was presented with the fans' Player of the Month award for August prior to the game and could have further added to his popularity had he taken two gilt-edged chances that fell his way.

In the 53rd minute he was put through in a one-on-one with Iron keeper Paul Musselwhite, only for the keeper to block his effort. Then, with 20 minutes remaining, Nugent shot far too early and weakly at Musselwhite when clear on goal.

The Shakers had opened the game the brighter, and Dwayne Mattis might have given them the lead inside the first three minutes when he glanced a corner just wide, before Barry-Murphy also wasted a great chance.

For the Iron, striker Andy Keogh deflected a shot from Richard Kell past Garner, only for it to be chalked off for offside. Then Beagrie made his class tell twice in the space of two minutes with a 25-yard free-kick that Garner saved at the second attempt and a powerful effort he lashed over the bar.

BURY: Garner 6, Unsworth 6, Swailes, 6, Challinor 6, Scott 8, Mattis 7, Flitcroft 7, Barry-Murphy 7, Kennedy 6, Nugent 7, Porter 6 (Newby 66).
