CIVIC pride won an East Lancashire man a nomination for the Queen Mother's birthday awards.
Chair of Pendle Civic Trust, Bill Ainsworth, was put forward by Tidy Britain for his efforts to clean up accessible water courses in the borough and tireless environmental work. The group's director general, Prof Graham Ashworth, said his dedication was very impressive.

EAST Lancashire shoppers were warned to keep watch for a contaminated batch of corned beef.
The meat, produced in Malta with the brand name Maverick, was removed from the shelves after it was blamed for an outbreak of food poisoning. Council officers warned supermarkets and families to bin any cans lurking in their larders

PEKINESE, Pomeranians and Poodles all turned up to dog auditions. The Frank H Fortescue company, of Blackburn, was set the task of finding two for a career in showbiz. Successful contestants were Peg, a 13-year-old Pom-Peke, and Remus, a Golden Peke. Unfortunately, Remus refused to share the limelight. He was axed at the last minute and replaced by an apricot-coloured poodle.
