STEVE Cotterill is going on the attack as Burnley seek a place in the third round of the Carling Cup tonight.

They host Wolves, the team directly below them in the Coca-Cola Championship, and the Clarets go into the game having not yet conceded a goal in September.

While the manager was pleased with Saturday's 0-0 draw at Leicester City, which followed an identical scoreline away to leaders Wigan, he is calling for his Burnley side to pack more punch in the opposition third.

Cotterill said: "We've got to make sure we're a bit more offensive at times. Going forward, we can expect a bit more from ourselves.

"Sometimes it looks as though when we go to the bigger grounds we don't always believe we can go there and get the three points, but I think slowly but surely that can come over a period of time."

However, the Clarets boss is making no apologies for the emphasis he has put on shutting out the opposition so far this season.

Although tonight's one-off cup tie might represent an opportunity to be a bit more expansive, the safety first method has resulted in Burnley having the joint best defensive record in the Championship.

Cotterill said: "You've got to start somewhere and if you're going to build a team you've got to start at the back with your goalkeeper and your centre backs in place. Then you need your strikers to score goals.

"We've got that in Ian Moore and Robbie Blake, albeit that we haven't played Ian up there as often as I would like, but we're short of bodies in midfield and wide areas.

"We've had a certain amount of money to strengthen the team and everybody knows where we strengthened but it might have to be next summer before we strengthen the rest of it.

"I said when I came it would take three years to get a team together here because of the simple reason of a lack of funds, but that's how it is.

"If we can do it before then that would be great but it's going to take a while. But it would be nice to be different sometimes.

"It's very difficult. We could do with a big target man, but give me the money and I'll go and get you one, without a shadow of a doubt."

Burnley and Wolves have identical records in the league but the Clarets are currently edging ahead on goal difference.

They will also be looking to avenge last season's third round defeat at Wolves, who were then in the Premiership, when they went down 2-0.
