ON the subject of MPs' expenses, David Chaytor has offered to reimburse constituents (Bury Times, October 29) if we are not happy with his performance. Given the published "bill" for his services, I say: Come on, hand it over!

But it won't make much difference to my pocket so he can donate my cut to Help the Aged. After the way Gordon Brown has wreaked havoc with his swingeing raids on the pensions of Joe Average most of us will need help once we are old . . . well, maybe not MPs.

On top of raking it in for all they are worth whilst in office, a superb guaranteed pension plan awaits them at the end. All MPs, not just Mr Chaytor, seem to believe that they are well worth their payment package. Funny how they nearly all manage to spend up to the limit of what is legally permitted, a limit significantly increased by this government over the overpaid levels of the last one.

Whatever happened to the MP who acted with servitude, dignity and in moderation? Serving the country seems to have taken second place to serving oneself across the whole political spectrum.

Just because MPs are telling us that they give good value doesn't mean we believe it. And the attacking of critics is an overplayed defence strategy too prevalent in this government. It is a bit sickening to hear the unjustifiable constantly being justified. Shame on you all.
