THREE 15-year-old girls were left abandoned in the centre of Lancaster by a taxi driver who tried to charge them extra because HE was late for a pre-arranged pick-up.

The driver turned up 45 minutes late for the girls on Friday night - but because the clock had turned midnight when he arrived in the Bay Horse area, he told the girls they would have to pay time and a half for the journey back into the city.

They didn't have enough money for the extra fare - so the driver stopped the cab and left the girls near the Boot and Shoe pub, still miles from home.

The girls finally got home safely but one of the mothers lodged a complaint with Lancaster City Council's taxi licensing department.

A spokesman for Lancaster City Council says: "It is not council policy to comment on individual cases.

"But I can confirm that the licensing office has received a complaint about a taxi and licensing officers are currently looking into it."
