ASTON Villa have given young defender Gary Cahill permission to spend another month on loan at Burnley.

Clarets boss Steve Cotterill contacted Villa counterpart David O'Leary earlier this week to try to land the highly-rated defender on a season-long loan.

Villa will not commit to such a lengthy deal at present, but have told Cotterill they are happy for the England Under 20 stopper to remain at Turf Moor until the New Year.

And providing Cahill himself is happy with the agreement, Burnley will have his services for a further seven Championship games, leading up to, and including the trip to Cotterill's former club Stoke City on January 3, 2005.

The Clarets boss revealed: "We will hopefully be extending Gary's loan for one more month.

"We are in agreement with Aston Villa and now I just have to have a chat with Gary and make sure he's happy.

"If that's the case, we are happy to have him for another month."

Cahill, 18, has been impressive in his initial month on loan, helping Burnley earn three successive clean sheets in the league.
