PRIMARY schools across Bury are leading the way for dyslexia awareness.
Thanks to a new initiative from Bury Council and the Dyslexia Institute, six schools are to be presented with a certificate rewarding their hard work in the field.
The accolade will be made by the Director of Education and Culture, Harold Williams, on January 13.
Councillor Maggie Gibb, the council's executive member for Lifelong Learning, said: "The aim of the project was to support reading, writing and spelling and create an environment in which all children thrive.
"It was important that parents were involved and encouraged to support the school in the development of their child's literacy skills."
The primary schools involved were: Sedgley Park, Prestwich; Mersey Drive, Whitefield, Radcliffe Hall, Radcliffe; St Peter's CE, Bury; Guardian Angels' RC, Bury; and Holcombe Brook, Ramsbottom.
Although funding from the Department for Education and Skills Small Programme Fund finished last April, many of the materials are now being used at other schools. To help with this development, the learning support team and two staff members from Holcombe Brook Primary School are developing specialist training to deliver to staff.
