HEREFORD UTD 4

STANLEY 0

FA Trophy 3rd round replay

Ten men hit trouble after Flynn's early dismissal

ACCRINGTON Stanley will not look back with fond memories on their trip to Edgar Street after crashing out of the FA Trophy at the first hurdle for the third time in three seasons.

And to make the pill even more bitter to swallow, they will have to do without Mike Flynn for at least one game after the defender was sent off for a professional foul after 27 minutes of last night's match.

Stanley were always second best after Flynn's departure and more composed finishing by Hereford could have seen an even more resounding defeat for John Coleman's side.

Stanley made one change from the side which played at the Interlink Express stadium on Saturday with veteran Paul Cook preferred to Rory Prendergast, who was relegated to the substitutes' bench.

He was joined there by Jonathan Smith, who took over from Chris Butler after returning from suspension.

Stanley were under the cosh right from the start as Hereford made use of the strong wind in their favour.

As early as the fifth minute, Paul Crichton had to show his agility in the visitors' goal as he stretched to tip over a shot from Danny Carey-Bertram which caught on the breeze.

In a rare Stanley raid, Ian Craney raced into the Hereford area but lost possession after a solid challenge from captain Tony James.

After this, Hereford moved back into the attack and it was no surprise when they went into the lead on 16 minutes.

Adam Stansfield raced on to a defence-splitting pass from Craig Stanley and hammered his 17th goal of the season past the helpless Crichton.

Stansfield was one of the central figures in the game's next pivotal moment on 27 minutes.

The Hereford leading scorer was racing through the middle when he was brought down by Flynn. Referee Bob Desmond adjudged the veteran defender to be the last man and reached for his red card.

Ten-man Accrington battled hard to stem the flow of the Bulls' attacks but fell further behind on 34 minutes when Carey-Bertram slammed the ball home from close range after the Stanley defence had failed to clear a Danny Williams corner.

Smith was introduced in place of Paul Howarth as Accrington reverted to a three-man defence and should have reduced the arrears four minutes before the break.

A slip by James sent Craney racing clear but the midfielder sliced his shot well wide of an upright.

The miss was punished almost immediately after the break when defender Tom Smith was left in the clear to head home following a Williams corner.

Stanley did not completely throw in the towel and Smith went close with a header from a Steve Jagielka cross.

But the tie was put beyond doubt on 66 minutes when Robbie Williams completely miskicked Simon Travis' cross and Carey-Bertram slotted home from four yards.

Craig Mawson saved well from Lee McEvilly's drive as Stanley went in search of a consolation goal, but Hereford would have added a fifth in the 86th minute but for an excellent interception by Robbie Williams from Rob Purdie's cross as substitute Andy Williams moved in for the kill.
