ANDY Burnham's "Save Leigh RMI" campaign has been given a massive cash boost.

The Leigh MP has won £400,000 worth of funding from the Football Foundation to help the Nationwide Conference strugglers to move from Hilton Park to the new stadium to be built at Leigh Sports Village.

The cheque will be presented to club officials on the pitch prior to the home game against York City on January 29.

The presentation will be the centre-piece of a day of events that it is hoped will mark a turning point in the fortunes of the club. Supporters of York City have agreed to take part in events with supporters of RMI to raise awareness about the club's plight, while it is hoped that players from Leigh Centurions will take part in a half-time penalty shoot-out.

Mr Burnham has asked local businesses to sponsor the match and is urging as many people as possible to come to the game to show support for the club.

He said: "I hope the town will come out in force on January 29 to show solidarity and support for Leigh RMI. This welcome funding from the Football Foundation shows what this football club is bringing to our town and why we need to pull together to save it."
