Auditions take place on Wednesday, February, 16, at the Civic Centre, West Paddock, Leyland, from 7-30pm-10pm, when the talented hopefuls will be whittled down to ten lucky entrants.

Those who make it to the final will be invited to perform in front of an audience on March 18 when the judging panel will cast their votes and select an overall winner.

The event, open to people of all ages, is being held by the Mayor of South Ribble Borough Council, Councillor Matthew Tomlinson, in aid of St Catherine's Hospice and Babybeat, with prize money donated by BNFL Westinghouse. Coun Tomlinson said: "I am really pleased that the Citizen has once again agreed to promote the event and along with sponsorship from BNFL Westinghouse, we will do our very best to create a wonderful grand final, featuring the best talent from the local area."

After stunning audiences with her haunting rendition of Natural Woman and I Say a Little Prayer, last year's winner, Sarah Bayliss, 37, of New Hall Lane, Leyland, has since launched a singing career.

The mother-of-two, whose brother-in-law is Preston soul singer Stephen Bayliss, put her winnings toward recording equipment and has since started singing at events, functions, weddings and parties.

Sarah said: "It was the competition that got me started in my career because the good feedback I received afterwards made me think that I could earn some money out of singing.

"It just goes to show that it is never too late to get involved in the music business."

Professional artists should not apply; the event is for amateur acts only. Backing tracks may be brought to the audition.

To audition, and for details, call the mayor's secretary, Lynda Mears, on 01772 625542.
