THE future of a planned multi-million pound new development in Heysham hinges on a public inquiry.

The Mossgate development - which includes a medical and dental surgery, a community centre, 400 homes and a police station - will go under the microscope when the inquiry opens at Lancaster Town Hall next week.

An inspector will begin looking at the minute details of the scheme next Tuesday, January 25.

It will be his task to decide whether the project - which would be built on green field land by local developers MAC Construction - should be allowed to go ahead.

Lancashire County Council has already set aside £1 million for a library on the estate.

The inquiry is needed because existing consent for MAC Construction to build on the land at Mossgate Park has expired, meaning money made from house sales and destined for community facilities is at risk.
