POLICE in Burnley today vowed to continue the war on yobs after a gang of teenage tearaways were given custodial sentences.

And they warned other youths not to step out of line - or they could face the same fate.

The four juveniles were sent down at Preston Crown Court for terms between 18 months and three years and nine months for the attempted robbery of a taxi driver, criminal damage and affray.

But police said the youngsters were also thought to be key members of a gang behind a catalogue of anti-social offences stretching back months.

Officers said the group saw themselves as "untouchable" and had made life a misery for people in the Lanehead area through damage, graffiti to drinking in the street.

Police, residents and community leaders today welcomed the sentences, handed down last week, and said they hoped their removal from the area would help make a difference.

Police had planned to apply for Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs) on conviction but it was ruled out due to the length of the sentences.

One 16-year-old was detained for three years and nine months, a 16-year-old and a 15-year-old received a sentence of three years and three months, while another 16-year-old was caged for 18 months.

Last year police secured an ASBO on Aaron George, 14, who had been causing problems in Lanehead. And in December six girls were arrested as part of a crackdown in the Fulledge area.

There are currently more than 30 ASBOs in operation across the borough, with five in Lanehead. Community beat manager, PC Janet Eaves, said she hoped the latest action would act as a strong deterrent to others thinking of stepping out of line.

"Tackling juvenile nuisance is one of our priorities and we will continue to take action against anybody engaging in anti-social behaviour."

Lanehead councillor Paula Riley added: "I am absolutely delighted. It is about time strong action was taken."
