VALE of Lune women stand on the verge of glory - just one win away from being crowned as Women's Premiership 2 champions.

Lune travel to Richmond on Sunday with a chance to win the title - and will almost certainly be confirmed as the title winners when they play Alton at Powder House Lane on February 20.

"It's a tremendous achievement to get so close in our first season at this level," team manager Sue Garnett says.

"When we went into this league I knew we would hold our own - but I never expected us to do so well. It's been fantastic."

Vale pressed home their advantage with an emphatic win over Blaydon, blowing away the cobwebs after a slow start to dominate every aspect.

Emma Bolton dived over in the corner to open up the scoring before full back Leanna Plunkett cut through the defence to score a try converted by Julie Clegg.

The next try came from some good individual skill by wing Claire Williams, who chipped over the top of the defence and won the race to touch down.

The second half followed the same pattern as slick handling from the backs set up Plunkett to waltz over the line to add to the advantage.

With the game won the Vale set about gaining an all important bonus point and more good back play set Luci Ollerton free to gallop around the defence.

Players of the match were Emma Bolton and Leanna Plunkett.
