ADULTS with learning disabilities have been left heartbroken after thieves stole bikes bought for them by charity fundraisers.

A trailer containing the three specially adapted bicycles and two tricycles was stolen from local branch of the charity CARE, based at Stanley Grange, Roach Road, Samlesbury.

The bikes had cost £7,000 and were used to give the 42 residents of Stanley Grange and a range of day visitors a sense of freedom on and off the site.

They were bought after a 12-month appeal which was boosted by charity fun days and donations from local businesses.

But when staff arrived at Stanley Grange yesterday morning they found a thief had driven off with the trailer on Monday night.

Now they are appealing for anyone who is offered the unusual and distinctive bikes to come forward with information so they can get them back.

CARE is a national charity providing services for people at eight centres across the country. Adults get the chance to work at skills including creative arts, IT and woodwork, and often go on to study at local colleges and schools.

Peter Gammon, of Stanley Grange who led the fundraising for the bikes, said: "It was awful because we had planned to use them later and there was a lot of disappointment.

"The bikes meant people could get out and about more and they received a great deal of enjoyment from using them.

"The people who took them probably didn't know the bikes were inside.

"We want them back because they are invaluable to us.

"The three bikes were adapted with wheelchair seats and so you could pedal with your hands, so they should be easy for people to spot."

Police are investigating the theft. Anybody with information is asked to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
