GATED estates will be resisted in Bury after plans for a new development off Bury Road in Tottington were ordered to be re-drawn.

Proposals for 24 new homes, served by a gated road from Sunnywood Lane, came up for discussion at planning control committee on Tuesday. However, councillors said they were uncomfortable with the idea of segregation.

The development proposed that 18 semi-detached homes and six apartments would be served by a private road with a gate. Councillors voiced concern that granting of permission would set a precedent for new, insular communities.

Coun Keith Grimes said: The building of new developments that are gated is a form of segregation that I do not want to be associated with.

Councillors voted to approve the plans on condition that the gate element be withdrawn.
