A TEENAGE hang-out could soon be established in the Peel Brow area of Ramsbottom if planning bosses approve an application for a youth shelter.

Peel Brow Tenants and Residents Association want to erect the shelter next to the play area in Fern Street. A similar application had been put in last year, but concerns over where the shelter was to be sited meant plans had to be changed.

Brenda Headley, from the association, said: "The proposed site of the shelter was too close to a pen and has been moved away from there.

"We have a grant to fund the shelter and are just waiting on planning permission."

She said that the youth shelter was the best teenagers could hope for as their constant requests to turn the former children's home in nearby Fir Street into a community centre had been turned down.

Bury Council had planned to re-open the home last year after it closed seven years ago. But a lack of money has meant the plans had to be axed.

Mrs Headley said: "The council are well aware of our feelings. A youth shelter is the best we can hope for after all the knockbacks we have had in trying to get a community centre for the young people where they can actually take part in different activities. The shelter will be somewhere they can just gather and talk."

The tenants and residents association has received more than £5,000 from the local network fund for children and young people to build the shelter.
