SHARP-eyed viewers may have spotted a familiar name in the credits of the new ITV sitcom Dead Man Weds.

Bury Times journalist Neil Brandwood has provided material for the show, based in a northern local newspaper, which stars and was written by Dave Spikey.

Neil, who has written a best-selling biography of Bury-born Victoria Wood, said: "Dave had already written most of it when I first got in contact with him last spring but he rated my stuff and has been able to use some of my scenes, lines and ideas. He said he might be able to use more if it goes to a second series. He has been really encouraging."

Neil added: "It's the first time I've written anything for television so it was obviously a huge thrill to see my stuff performed."

The show is about a disgraced former national journalist Gordon Garden (Dave Spikey) who arrives at the Fogburrow Advertiser and tries to inject some enthusiasm into the highly resistant staff. Among the other stars appearing are Johnny Vegas, Tim Healy and Keith Barron.

Made by the award-winning and Manchester-based Red Productions, it has been hailed as the first decent ITV sitcom for years.

Neil said: "It's only bits and pieces that I've written, but it's a start. Many people don't realise that Dave not only starred in Phoenix Nights, but he also co-created and co-wrote it, so to be connected with someone of that calibre is a big kick.

"It's really inspired me to write more."
