PUB landlady Rachel Linford is calling for Bury Council to show more bottle when it comes to recycling.

Miss Linford (27) took over at the Pleasant View on Tottington Road in November last year and decided to do her bit for the environment.

She rang Bury Council to see if she could be provided with a recycling bin for the hundreds of bottles that are disposed of to landfill each week.

But Miss Linford, who pays waste charges of more than £300 per year, was staggered to hear that there were no facilities for pubs to recycle.

She said the policy is inconsistent with attempts to promote recycling among householders in the borough.

Miss Linford said: "Every week I fill a large industrial bin, mostly with bottles, all of which goes to landfill.

"It is ludicrous that Bury Council are saying that they want to recycle glass, and then refuse someone with a large amount of glass who wants to join their scheme."

Miss Linford estimates that every week her establishment produces around 1,000 litres of bottle waste.

She said: "I've been told they would get £25 to £40 for each tonne of glass they collected. If they wanted they could keep that and I would still pay the same.

"How can they claim that it would cost too much to recycle from a business that produces hundreds of bottles, when you compare that with collecting from houses?"

Bury Council's operational services manager Mike Savage admitted that there was no recycling service for commercial premises, but said that many pubs had arrangements with private firms.

He said: "I wish that we could do something at this time, but we are not able to supply recycling bins to pubs because they are classed as commercial."
