IN 1967 our daughter, then aged 18, decided on a nursing career. After three years of training she passed her finals, then did a further 12 months and became a state certified midwife. She was promoted to sister and worked on the district conscientiously, being devoted to all her patients. However, last year she decided to retire.
An evening was arranged and she, along with other NHS workers, received her well-earned awards. At that ceremony, our daughter was the longest serving employee with a total of 37 years and, for this, was given a cheque for £100, which works out at approximately 5p for each week of her working life.
