TWO local schools are officially leading the way for dyslexia after receiving an award for their efforts to raise awareness of the condition.
Teachers from Sedgley Park in Prestwich and Mersey Drive in Whitefield were awarded certificates in recognition of their work by Bury Councils director of education and culture, Harold Williams.
Staff at four other schools in the borough were also recognised: Guardian Angels' RC and St Peter's CE in Bury, Holcombe Brook in Ramsbottom, and Radcliffe Hall in Radcliffe,
Each school encouraged reading, writing and spelling within the classrooms using a new initiative developed by Bury Council and the Dyslexia Institute and funded from the Department for Education and Skills Small Programme Fund.
And now the initiative is spreading to other schools with many teaching materials being used and specialist training being delivered to staff members.
