A TEENAGE girl has died after her car overturned on the A675 Belmont Road, near Abbey Village.

Police believe the orange Citroen Saxo swerved onto the wrong side of the road and hit a lamppost before overturning and rolling down an embankment.

The accident happened near the junction with Scout Road at 9.20pm yesterday.

The 19-year-old, from the Bolton area, was travelling from Bolton towards Abbey Village when she lost control of the car, said a police spokesman. No other vehicle was involved.

She suffered multiple injuries to her head and body and was rushed to Bolton Royal Infirmary.

The girl, who has not yet been named, was formally identified by her parents but other family members were still to be told of her death.

The road was closed for four hours as police investigators searched the scene for clues as to the cause of the accident.

Inspector Steve Howarth, of Blackburn Police, said: "The family are extremely distraught. Accident investigators are doing what they can to work out the last seconds of the vehicle's movement."

The A675 is a notorious accident blackspot. The speed limit varies from 40mph to 50mph and there have been many crashes over the last couple of years, prompting calls for safety measures.

Fire crews cut a 25-year-old man free from his car after it collided with another vehicle on the M65 westbound, near junction 12 at Burnley, at 11.20pm yesterday.

Both drivers were taken to Burnley General Hospital but neither was seriously injured.
