Plans to hold a massive 5-a-side football tournament to help raise money for the victims of the Tsunami tragedy are under way.

It is hoped a Seniors and a Juniors tournament will be held over a weekend in February and March and will attract the interest of clubs around the region.

Asian Image Sport will have full details of the tournament in our next issue out on February 7.

If any clubs want to enter the tournament they can ring Asian Image on 01254 298263 and leave their contact details.

Meanwhile, Leagues and clubs have already been doing their bit for the fundraising effort.

The Blackburn Community seven-a-side League is handing over money earmarked for end-of-season trophies to the Disasters Emergency Committee -- and asked each of its 50 clubs to support the cause.

The league, which plays its matches on Witton Park's all-weather pitches, will donate £500 and asked each club to donate at least £10 each.

If the clubs back the league's appeal, it should raise more than £1,000. The league committee decided to take action after the Boxing Day disaster which has claimed so many lives in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and beyond.

It is a similar appeal, but on a much smaller scale, to that seen in the Premier League where clubs donated £50,000 each.

"Because of the events of the last month, we feel we have a social obligation to do something to help the people of southern Asia." said Ismail Esat.

"The league has already sent off a £500 donation -- money raised through club fines -- to the DEC and hopes that amount can be matched by teams this month."

"We will be contacting each of the clubs and asking them to help. A donation of £10 per team is only a couple of quid from each player. It is not a lot but it all adds up to help people affected by the disaster."

The Blackburn and Darwen Junior League and the Blackburn Sunday League are hoping to make donations to the appeal while members of the Blackburn Referees Association will give up their match fees.
