I WAS dismayed to read about Jack Straw's disregard for democracy (LET, May 16).

The seats in our Parliament totally fail to reflect the number of votes cast.

I for one do not want to be ruled by "strong government" elected by barely 20 per cent of the total electorate.

It ill-behoves us and the USA to tell other countries how to be democratic.

Under proportional representation, there is no reason why a major political party should poll more than a 50 per cent share of the vote if its policies were strong and sound.

Also very distasteful and smacking of double standards, is the fact that Scottish, Welsh, Northern Ireland and European elections which seem very fair, employ proportional representation.
