STUDENTS from Lancaster and Morecambe College have been urged to take a break from revision...

The Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety called to urge them to think about something that could have a far greater effect on their future than exam results - road safety.

It was highlighting its 'Pause' campaign, which targets new drivers and asks them to stop and think for a few seconds about the way they drive.

Statistics show that one in five new drivers are likely to be involved in an accident in their first year, says the partnership.

Last year alone, 158 drivers aged between 17 and 21 were either killed or seriously injured on Lancashire roads - with young motorists more likely than those of mature years to be involved in high speed crashes, crashes at night, crashes when overtaking or when negotiating bends.

Partnership spokesman Linda Sanderson says: "Young drivers are particularly vulnerable because of their inexperience, lack of road sense and under-developed hazard perception.

"At the same time, many are over-confident of their ability, meaning that they will take risks."
