From the Guide files of Friday, February 8, 1980: WHITEFIELD meals on wheels service received a visit from the Mayor of Bury in recognition of their work.
The ladies, who cook all the meals for local pensioners who take advantage of the service, had been doing so for 15 years. Coun David Davies dropped in to the headquarters in Elm Street, Whitefield.
l OUR Lady of Grace Primary School did not lose a football match all season and finished top of the league for Prestwich and Whitefield schools. In the 14 matches they won, 65 goals were scored and only 12 conceded. Highest goal scorer in the OLOG team was Eddie Corcoran, who netted 19 times.
l THE Rt Rev Stanley Eric Booth-Clibborn was celebrating two special events when he visited Prestwich.
One was to dedicate the new £90,000 hall at the Parish School and the second was his first anniversary as Bishop of Manchester.
l THE Guide offices in Heaton Park were the scene of a drugs bust. Police discovered ten bottles of barbiturate and amphetamine capsules plus some tincture of Opium in front of the offices in a plastic carrier bag.
l THE Rotary Club of Prestwich and Whitefield arranged a day trip to London to try and raise funds for charity. The club put on a special charter train and charged the bargain price of £7.95 return. Tickets for children were at £6.50.
