RADCLIFFE celebrated the 40th anniversary of its annual carnival at the weekend.

Hundreds of residents from across the town took to the pavements on Saturday to watch the parade of brightly decorated cars and floats, featuring the carnival queen and princess and rose queens from across Greater Manchester.

And there was a funfair, stalls and other entertainment at Red Bank playing fields.

Event chairman Ray Vevers, aid: "I worry every year, but I don't know why. The field was full and we had more floats and cars than we thought we would in the parade.

"I'm really pleased now it has all come together."

Mr Vevers and other organisers arrived at the carnival site at 6am on Saturday morning to ensure that the two-day event ran smoothly.

The fun on the field started as early as 10am. Troupes of majorettes and dancers in distinct uniforms from across the region took turns to put on dazzling displays.

The Silcock's funfair catered for thrill seekers and there were the more traditional attractions, like hook-a-duck and a coconut shy.

Plenty of carnivalgoers were attracted to the vintage car display and on Sunday there was a commercial vehicle rally.
